City can thank Alpena Co for lower garbage pickup costs

The City of Alpena can ultimately thank county officials for a new garbage disposal contract that saves taxpayers money.

The Municipal Council approved a new 3-year trash contract last night, awarding it to long-time provider L & N Disposal.  But, what has councilman Mike Nunneley and some others upset is the dramatic drop in prices by L & N since it learned in February the City would be bidding out the contract.

L & N initially proposed a cost of between $7.25 – $7.75 a cubic yard for garbage pick up.  Through the new contract they will be paid $4.50 – $4.75 a cubic yard over the 3 year period – a 40-percent drop.

“How did the price of garbage go down so quickly since February?” Nunneley questioned.  “I’m concerned that had we (council) gone with the automatic renewal of this contract we would be paying significantly more.”

Nunneley also wanted to “send a clear message” to other contractors that the City would be reviewing automatic contract renewals in the future and he hopes those companies come in with sound bids.

City Council decided to bid out the contract after it learned the county was paying much less to have its trash picked up.
