Michigan State is the fifth seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA basketball tournament. The Spartans will play 12th-seeded New Mexico State in a first-round matchup Friday in Spokane, Washington. Last year’s NCAA runner-up stretched its string of NCAA tournament bids to 13, all under coach Tom Izzo.

Oakland will play third-seeded Pittsburgh on Friday in Milwaukee in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Golden Grizzlies are the 14th seed in the West Region. They earned an automatic bid by winning the Summit League

championship.

Detroit Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello has yet to allow a run in nine exhibition innings this spring. He pitched four scoreless innings as Detroit beat Tampa Bay 9-6 yesterday in Florida. Rookie Austin Jackson tripled twice and went 3-for-4 with three runs.

The Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association has initiated a lifetime contribution award named for Hall of Fame Detroit Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell. He’s the first winner of the annual award.
