The community is invited to a special open house event at Alpena High School Monday, to tour Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.

In addition, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held for a new mechatronics lab.

The open house is being held from 4:30 to 6p.m.

All career and technical education classrooms and labs will be open to the public and light refreshments will be available.  Citizens can try out a virtual welder in the welding lab; and attendees who visit all nine CTE programs will be placed in prize drawings.

“Our students are working on equipment and in rooms that replicate industry,” said Joyce McCoy, career & technical education for Alpena Public Schools.  “The Alpena community can be proud of the investment we are making to prepare the future work force.”

APS received a $400,000 grant in spring to purchase equipment for a mechatronics and design lab as well as a computer lab.  Mechatronics is basically technology combining electronics and mechanical engineering.

I want to thank our teachers, support staff, and community partners for their hard work in making our mechatronics lab second to none in Michigan!,” said John VanWagoner, Superintendent of APS.  “Students across our region are learning on the same high tech equipment used in industry and will be able to move from our program to Alpena community college and to the workforce!”
