A Detective-Lieutenant from the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office was recently honored for his heroic actions involving an incident with a suicidal gunman.

Mike Brege was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal from the Michigan Sheriff’s Association for his bravery stemming from the January 21, 2017 incident in Wolverine.

Brege took command of a scene where a barricaded gunman had already fired a handgun at an occupied vehicle.  The suspect then entered his home and exited with a shotgun under his chin and finger on the trigger.   Brege negotiated with the man for nearly an hour until the suspect laid down his gun.

Sheriff Dale Clarmont nominated Brege for the medal.  “The instantaneous, professional and heroic actions that day not only saved the life of the gunman but also proved to ensure the safety of all responding law enforcement and first responder personnel,” said Clarmont.

Brege received his medal at the Michigan Sheriff’s Association Memorial and Award Ceremony held in Bay City on June 10.
