AHS Science Olympiad team advances to state championship

The Alpena High School Science Olympiad team took first place at a weekend regional Science Olympiad tournament at Alpena Community College.

The Wildcat team took first place in 14 of 23 events at the tournament Saturday, which featured teams from across a 14-county area of northern Michigan.

AHS students who one 3 or more gold medals include: Samantha Tadian (1st in Disease Detectives, Anatomy, Microbe Mission); Ashwin Chhapamohan (1st in Herpetology, Rocks and Minerals, and Towers); Kevin Cook (1st in Herpetology, Helicopters, Rocks and Minerals); Jenna Peterson (1st in Chem Lab, Helicopters, Forensics); and Bradley Thompson (1st in Remote Sensing, Material Science, and Towers).

The Alpena High team now advance to the Michigan Science Olympiad State Championship at Michigan State University on April 28.

Science Olympiad is an extracurricular educational program with a mission to inspire the next generation of scientists, health professionals and engineers. For some activities, the experience is very “hands-on.”  Tournaments feature 23 separate events ranging from anatomy to astrophysics to aeronautics.
