Police officers from all agencies in Alpena will be taking less fortunate children Christmas shopping this weekend, as part of the 14th annual “APD Holiday Shop with a Cop” event.

The event pairs local law enforcement officers with area children who have been “pre-selected” and referred by the Department of Health and Human Services to shop together for the holidays.

Each child receives a Walmart gift card and is encouraged to shop not only for themselves but also for their parents and siblings in the spirit of giving.  Kids will start the day by eating breakfast with officers, followed by a visit with Santa Claus.

Officers and AHS D.A.R.E. role models then assist children with filling their wish lists and wrapping gifts.

The event is being held on Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.  Local credit unions pay for the kids Walmart gift cards.

For more information on the event call 354-7200.
