It was 76 years ago today, that U.S. troops stationed at Pearl Harbor were awakened by gunfire and explosions.

History was made at 7:53 in the morning, on this date in 1941.

A Japanese force of 183 bombers and torpedo planes attacked U.S. military and naval facilities at Pearl Harbor.  The initial attack lasted for 30 minutes.  Fifteen minutes later a second wave of 170 planes launched another assault, lasting an hour.

A total of 2,335 U.S. service personnel were killed in the attack, along with 68 civilians.  Another 1,178 people were wounded.  One-hundred and fifty-one U.S. planes were destroyed on the ground and 18 ships were sunk or run aground, including five battleships.

The following day the United States declared war on Japan.
