Hunters gear up for start of firearm deer season

It’s nearly time to put down the bow and pick up the gun.

Tuesday is the last day of archery season in Michigan but hunters head back into the woods Wednesday for the start of the firearm deer season.

The Department of Natural Resources says hunters in northeast Michigan should have better success rates compared to last year.   Officials say the deer population is up across the entire Northern Lower Peninsula due to a mild winter last year and little impact from the previous winter.  Deer sightings have been good throughout the region.

Antler restrictions may also lead to larger bucks being harvested this year.

Over 300,000 hunters participate in Michigan’s archery season, about 600,000 hunt with a firearm and 200,000 with a muzzleloader.
