Hunting camp near Hawks goes up in flames

Submitted by Phil Heimerl on November 13, 2017 – 12:44 amNo Comment

A hunting camp near Hawks was destroyed by fire late Friday night.

The Rogers City Fire Department was dispatched to the fire on South Ward Branch Road shortly after 11 p.m.

The main building at the camp was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on scene.  Case Township firefighters were called in to assist.  Water needed to be hauled in by tanker trucks.

Rogers City Fire Chief Michael Kroll said no one was at the camp when the fire broke out.  He said the owners had been there earlier in the day, getting the camp ready for deer season.  He said the fire may have started in the chimney.

Kroll said the building was a total loss.

Residents are reminded to have their chimneys cleaned and inspected annually, prior to the heating season.  Kroll said people should also make sure to check batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
