The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists to be extra careful on the roads this time of year as more deer are on the move.

The sheriff’s office advises drivers to slow down especially at dawn and dusk when deer are more active and people are going to and from work.

“Deer activity will increase over the next month because of the rut and hunters taking to the woods,” said Sheriff Dale Clarmont.  “If you see a deer crossing the road there are probably more following so slow down and be prepared.  Do not swerve out of your lane and brake appropriately.”

The Cheboygan sheriff’s office responded to 79 car-deer crashes during October and November 2016, a 30 increase over 2015.  Those accidents accounted for tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

The sheriff’s office has handled 24 car-deer crashes during the first two weeks of October.
