Birthday wish of local boy helps feed the hungry

A 10 year-old local boy was thinking more about less fortunate people then himself on a recent birthday, when he asked those coming to his party to make a donation to help feed the hungry rather than bring him a gift.

Caleb Potter had one wish when he blew out the candles on his birthday cake – that no one would go hungry.

Instead of collecting gifts for himself, Caleb asked family and friends to bring a non-perishable food item to his party, or make a monetary donation to The Salvation Army’s food pantry.

His efforts resulted in nearly $100 in cash as well as bags of food to help replenish food pantry shelves.

“We are so blessed that this young man thought beyond himself to the struggles of his friends and neighbors and sacrificed in order for others to benefit,” said Captain Amy Cedervall of The Alpena Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army helps provide food for an average of 40-50 families every month through their food pantry.  For more information on donating food items or your time to The Salvation Army, call 358-2769.
