Presque Isle Electric & Gas Co-op says it will be more environmentally friendly by January 1, 2018.

The utility company says it will be reducing its carbon footprint by 36 percent to achieve a 56 percent carbon-free fuel mix.

Carbon-free refers to cleaner power generation and includes wind, solar, hydro and nuclear.

“As a community partner, we are committed to supporting cleaner power generation which means cleaner air and water for a healthier environment for our members,” said Tom Sobeck, chief executive officer of PIE&G.  “We’re proud to significantly reduce emissions in a way that reinforces our core mission of providing reliable and cost-competitive energy for our members.”

To reach a more carbon-free portfolio, PIE&G’s power supplier, Wolverine Power Cooperative, signed a new long-term contract for zero-emission energy.  PIE&G says the new agreement also helps ensure power costs remain competitive for years to come.
