County on hook for medical bills of banged up inmate
Alpena County is on the hook for the cost of a surgical procedure for an inmate that came in banged up.
The suspect is facing multiple charges and allegedly stole a vehicle.
His name has not been released.
According to Sheriff Steve Kieliszewski, the suspect was in some sort of a fight prior to being arrested and was “…beat up pretty good,” with a broken nose and other facial injuries. In fact, the injuries were so severe the suspect required outpatient surgery for his nose Wednesday, in Kalkaska.
Sgt. Scott Gagnon, Jail Administrator, says that because the inmate is in custody of Alpena County, the county is responsible for the cost of the surgery and all follow up procedures or medical treatment for as long as he remains in jail. “We could go after him for the medical costs after he gets out of jail,” said Gagnon, “but I don’t know how successful we would be.”
The suspect’s crime or crimes remain under investigation. Gagnon doesn’t know if the person or persons who assaulted the suspect have been caught.
