Alpena County is considering a contract extension with Northern Lights Arena Community to continue leasing the ice rink off Woodward Avenue.

The county’s finance committee this week, approved a one-year extension with NLA Community, which has been managing the facility for the past approximate four years.

The lease extension requires approval of the full board of commissioners which meets April 25.

“I think they’re (NLA Community) doing a great job,” said County Chairman Cam Habermehl.

The county is completing a walk-through of the arena to make sure there are no maintenance issues or outstanding repairs.

The original lease between the county and NLA Community ended on August 31, 2016, however it includes a renewal for two one-year extensions if both parties agree.  Since the proposed extension is the last one for the current contract, the two parties could renegotiate a more long term deal in 2018.
