Beginning Monday and continuing through the end of the month, the Second Avenue Bridge in Alpena will be closed to all traffic.

The bridge is undergoing a major renovation project and starting Monday crews will be doing some painting, leading to the closure.

Motorists will be required to use the Ninth Avenue Bridge to get from one side of downtown to the other.  Detour signs will direct traffic.

All businesses will remain open.

It is anticipated the bridge will be closed through January 31, however that time frame could be extended if weather or construction delays occur.

The city is spending roughly $2.6 million to $2.7 million on the bridge project, which includes new drive motors to lift the gate, repainting, concrete repairs, structural steel repairs, electrical upgrades and more.

The majority of the project will be completed in spring.  The bridge is scheduled to be closed to all traffic for about a five-week period, from May 1 to June 8.
