A former Alpena man convicted of a grisly 1993 murder has been released from prison.

Matthew (Matt) Stephen Mazurak walked out of the Carson City Correctional Facility a free man Thursday, after serving 16-plus years of a 22-35 year sentence for 2nd degree murder.

On December 9, 1993, Mazurak brutally attacked and killed then 19 year-old Tanya Habermehl.  The two had dated for a lengthy period of time but Habermehl had recently broken up with the then 20 year-old Mazurak who lived in Wilson Township, off Badder Road.

Mazurak used a knife to stab Habermehl repeatedly in the neck and other parts of her body.  He then went to his grandmother’s home, confessed to the murder and shot himself in the stomach with a gun.

In addition to the 16-plus years in prison, Mazurak spent three years in the Alpena County Jail.

The victim’s family and the prosecutor’s office were successful in keeping him behind bars last year, but the Michigan Parole Board had no legal reason to keep him in prison any longer.

Mazurek turned 39 years old in March of this year.
