The National Weather Service in Gaylord is gearing up for the spring season by hosting a series of SKYWARN weather spotter training classes across northern Michigan.

The weather service relies on weather spotters for real-time reports during storms, for local weather measurements – such as rain totals, and to verify severe weather events.

Weather spotter training classes are free, last approximately 1 ½ hours and there is no need to pre-register.

The weather service is hosting four training classes in northeast Michigan this spring, in Atlanta, Cheboygan, East Tawas and Harrisville.  The Atlanta and East Tawas classes are being held next week, and the Cheboygan and Harrisville classes are being held in April.

Dates, times and locations can be viewed below.

Due to the complexity of severe thunderstorms and the potential dangers involved, spotting is recommended for ages 18 and older.   Middle and high school students are welcome to attend the classes with a parent or other adult.

AREA SKYWARN WEATHER SPOTTER TRAINING CLASSES:
Tuesday, March 19, 6:30 p.m. East Tawas Fire Department

Thursday, March 21, 6:30 p.m., Tri-Township Fire Station in Atlanta

Monday, April 15, 5:30 p.m., Cheboygan Public Library

Thursday, April 18, 6:30 p.m., Alcona County EMS building in Harrisville
