A former member of the Alpena fair board made an appearance in court this week, for allegedly embezzling more than $20,000 from the  Alpena Agricultural Society and Future Farmers of America.

Bradley Alan Avery, 36, is charged with stealing the money over a three-year period while he was the acting treasurer of the board.

Avery is facing six counts including embezzlement of $20,000 or more but less than $50,000, two counts of embezzlement of $1,000 or more but less than $20,000 from a nonprofit or charitable organization, and three counts of illegal use of a financial transaction device.

It was announced in court that attorneys for both sides need more time to conduct discovery, which could include forensics and additional interviews with experts.  Avery’s attorney, Dan White, also plans to file at least one motion which will be heard about mid-march.

Avery remains free on bond.  Investigators believe he may have embezzled roughly $40,000.
