Some personnel from the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC) were at the air base in Latvia Friday, participating in a large-scale emergency response exercise.

The exercise was the latest phase of collaboration between the Michigan Air National Guard and the Latvian Air Force, which have had a close defense cooperation for 25 years.

The exercise was essentially set up as an attempt to breach the airfield perimeter when a car hit a barrier by the main gate.  The exercise included four functional areas of specialization: force protection (security), medical, fire protection, and airfield operations.  Alpena personnel were overseeing some of the fire and evacuation training.

There are discussions of doing a similar training exercise with forces from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia when they return to northern Michigan next fall for exercise Northern Strike 19.

National Guard members from Battle Creek and Selfridge Air National Guard Base also participated in Friday’s event.  Michigan soldiers were also involved in ceremonies Sunday, marking the 100th anniversary of Latvia’s independence.
