This year’s Veterans Day ceremony in Alpena will be held at Besser Museum, not Little Flanders Field as in years past.

Area military veterans, their families and others will gather near the Veterans Memorial at the museum Sunday, at 11 a.m.

Veterans Day is devoted to the men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces and those killed in battle.

Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day is always recognized on November 11 and was originally chosen to commemorate the end of World War I, in 1918.

After World War II it was known as a day to pay tribute to all service members, and in 1954 it was renamed Veterans Day.

The ceremony at Besser Museum includes an invocation by Bill Romstadt, a rifle salute and the playing of Taps.  All veteran service groups will be represented with special recognition given to those who served during World War II.

Major General Burton Francisco will be the featured speaker at the event.  A luncheaon for veterans will be held at VFW Post 2496 following the ceremony.
