APS: Buses, bussing & Dean Transportation

Submitted by Phil Heimerl on October 10, 2018 – 12:44 amNo Comment

Alpena Public Schools plans to upgrade the welfare of its fleet by purchasing three new buses.

The new vehicles will replace older models from 2002 and 2003.

The cost, which was budgeted for, is a little more than $266,000.

The board of education is expected to approve the purchase when it meets next Monday.

Meanwhile, Superintendent John VanWagoner says he is generally pleased with the performance of Dean Transportation.  Dean was hired to manage the school district’s transportation department, which includes scheduling of buses and supervision of bus drivers and mechanics.

VanWagoner said there was an initial learning curve but things are now working smoothly.   He said the biggest issue in transportation continues to be a lack of available bus drivers, noting that both dispatchers and mechanics have been forced to drive bus this year.
