The 63rd annual meeting of the United Way of Northeast Michigan was held on June 12th at the APlex.

During the meeting, the minutes of the May 16, 2017 annual meeting and the treasurer’s report regarding the financial status of the entity as of December 31, 2017 were approved.

Also approved was the 2017 review of financial position that was presented by Marie Williams & Matt Mertz with Boldery, Senchuk, Rouleau & Williams.

Five individuals were nominated and elected to the Board of Directors for a first term. Those members are Terry King (Alpena County Sheriff’s Office); Ed Klimczak (Allegra); Lyn Kowalewsky (ACC); Rev. Paul Lance (First Congregational Church); Scott Reynolds (AMA Educational Service District).

The following five members agreed to a second term on the Board: Ken Anderson (MI ANG-Alpena CRTC); Lori Clark (NEMCSA); Michelle McEwen (Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union); Anne Mare Smith (MBank); Dave Szydlowski (NEMROC).

Steve Jakubcin, from Cliff Anschuetz Chevrolet and Alison Jakubcin, with Alpena Alcona Area Credit United will again serve as the campaign leadership for the 2018/19 campaign. Alison commented, “As the first year as campaign chairpersons comes to an end, we are so very pleased that we took on this leadership role. This role has enlightened us as to the value of having the United Way here in our community.  The number of people assisted each year by the United Way and the community supported agencies is amazing.”

Steve added, “People are receiving help with shelter because they are homeless; students are helped so that they can graduate; youth are learning every day because of excellent childcare; homebound seniors are receiving meals and companionship; and the list goes on. Saying that the “United Way builds a better community” is so true, because of the continuation of vital programs and services for the citizens in northeast Michigan.”

Jakubcin’s were pleased to report that the 2017 campaign was not only achieved but exceeded, the goal was $214,000 and $216,983 was raised. This is 101.3% of the goal. But they had even better news, the 2018 campaign goal was $215,000 and again the goal was not only achieved but surpassed. Current pledges are at $219,434 or 102% of the goal.

Steve said, “This could not have been possible without the generous and giving people in northeast Michigan. Citizens in the community know that the United Way will work diligently to make sure the funds are used properly and disbursed where they are needed.”

In regular session following the annual meeting, a slate of new officers for the 2018/19 year was presented and elected President, Dave Szydlowski (NEMROC), President Elect; Staci Chroninger (MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena), Secretary, Angie Crittenden (Lafarge), Treasurer, Anne Marie Smith (MBank).
