James Herman Miesen

James Herman Miesen, 80, of Ossineke, passed away unexpectedly at Mid-Michigan Medical Center-Alpena on Tuesday June 12, 2018. James was a well-known educator that touched the lives of many students and was loved by all.

He was born on Dec. 29, 1937 to the late Karl and Eulalia (Greer) Miesen in Chicago, IL. He went on to join hands in marriage to Barbara (Butcher) on Nov. 25, 1960 at the Albion College Chapel in Albion, MI. The two had the same great passion for teaching and spent many years as instructors. Mr. Miesen obtained his

Bachelor’s Degree from Albion College and his Master’s degree from Central Michigan University. He was an English Instructor at Alpena Community College. James was greatly respected by his colleagues. In fact, he was asked to author a book for the college called “Forty Years Alpena Community College”. He was involved in many different organizations throughout his career such as the Thunder Bay Theatre, Alpena Civic Theatre, Snow Drifters Club, and he was the president of the Community Concert Association.

After his retirement, he enjoyed blacksmithing, golfing, spending time with his very dear friends and family, as well as extensive traveling with his wife Barbara.

James is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Barbara, daughter, Beth (Greg) Hurd of Alpena, MI., granddaughter, Rachel Hurd of Grand Rapids, MI., two brothers, Donald (Jan) Miesen of Rockford, MI. and Karl (Norene) Miesen of Cleburne, TX., two sisters, Judy (Dan) Schooly of Fremont, MI., and Helen Miesen of Hillsdale, MI. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother in law Ann (Wayne) Matthews.

A private memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. McWilliams Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
