Alpena: Snowiest April on record

It’s now official – April 2018 will go down as the snowiest April in Alpena’s history.

That’s mostly due to two large snowstorms.

As of Sunday at midnight, the Alpena area had received a total of 24.8 inches of snow this month, breaking the previous record for April of 23.0 inches, set in 2003.

Tim Locker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, also says Friday’s snowfall total of 3.4 inches tied a record in Alpena; and Saturday’s total of 7.3 inches broke the previous record for April 14 of 3.4 inches, set in 1928.

The official snowfall total from the weekend storm is 13.4 inches, although a weather spotter on the north side of Alpena County measured 12 inches on Saturday alone.

The season to date snowfall total stands at 76.6 inches.  During a typical winter the Alpena area receives 82.4 inches of snow.
