City of Alpena Manager Greg Sundin presented the municipal council Monday night, with an annual State of the City address for 2017-18.

The 24 page report was basically broken into four categories – the community, city management and operations, city initiatives and projects, and challenges and priorities moving forward.

Sundin spoke about a continued and steady economic rebound taking place in Alpena.  He said the city “continues to maintain a strong fiscal posture as we move into 2018.”  He also went through a lengthy list of projects and initiatives either started or completed over the past year.

Sundin said a few of the challenges that lie ahead include maintaining the tax base, legacy costs associated with city employee pensions, operation of the city marina, and the ongoing water/sewer rate litigation with Alpena Township.

But overall, Sundin is encouraged by what he sees happening in the community.  “We have some big issues looming ahead of us, but I am confident we will meet them head on and see our way through,” he added.

The full report can be viewed on the city’s website.
