A group of Alpena citizens has organized a memorial vigil for the victims of last week’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Fourteen students and three school employees were killed when 19 year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire with an AR-15 rifle.

Fourteen others were injured in the shooting.

The local memorial vigil will be held in the front oval at Alpena High School Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

In addition, the small group of residents is working with the non-profit organization Sandy Hook Promise on programs and initiatives that can help keep kids safe from gun violence.  The group plans to hold a meeting in the future to talk about what can be done locally.  A date and time has not yet been set.

Sandy Hook Promise was founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.
