The top five issues affecting youth in northeast Michigan include stress, depression and mental health, self-esteem, substance abuse and a lack of things to do locally.

That’s according to the 2018 Northeast Michigan Youth Needs Assessment survey, which was recently conducted among students at high schools in Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency and Presque Isle counties.

The Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council (NEMYAC), a philanthropy program through the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM), is required to conduct a survey of peers every three years, to gain insight into issues affecting local teenagers. The results of the survey are then used to guide the Council’s grantmaking for the next three years to address those issues.

“The survey results really help our NEMYAC members to focus their grant dollars where they are needed most,” said YAC Advisor Tom Stoppa. “They show what is really impacting our kids today.”

Bullying, pressure from school work, body image, underage alcohol use and financial issues round out the top 10 issues affecting local teens.
