Light ‘em up – volleyball courts at Mich-e-ke-wis to get lighting

The beach volleyball courts at Mich-e-ke-wis Park will be lit up this summer.

The Alpena Mixed Beach Volleyball League has received a nearly $14,000 grant through the voter-approved Youth and Recreation millage to install light poles.

The City of Alpena supports the project and is acting as a fiduciary for the league.  The city helped secure the grant and took care of the bidding process for the project.  Omega Electric of Alpena came in with the low bid and was awarded the job.

The bid came in $550 over the estimated price and the volleyball league has agreed to cover the added cost.

City engineer Rich Suullenger says the lights will be on a one-hour timer and must be reset each hour.  They will not operate past 11 p.m.  The new lighting will be installed prior to the start of the season.
