County pay raises cost taxpayers well over $100K

Alpena County’s general fund budget deficit for 2018 went up by nearly $100,000 since it was approved in December.

The new shortfall for the year is approximately $661,000.

County Treasurer Kim Ludlow told the finance committee this week, that an additional $95,000 was added to the deficit to cover the cost of pay increases and benefits for non-union employees, department heads and county commissioners.

Those employees and elected officials received a 2 percent bump in pay.

All union employees also received a pay raise in 2018, adding tens of thousands of dollars to the deficit.  They each received an additional 36 cents per hour.

Needed maintenance work at the health department building that was not budgeted for might push the deficit closer to $700,000.
